Tokyo–Yokohama, Taipei–Keelung:
Infrastructure and Port Societies as Stratified Landscapes

[Concept]
As capitals open themselves to the world, the infrastructures and port societies established to support them may undergo transformation, yet continue to exist as layered landscapes. These overlapping layers of civil engineering, architecture, and urban foundations—each with its own historical trajectory—form the very backdrop of our present-day societies. In times of war or large-scale disasters, such historically distinct infrastructures may be destroyed, but they can also function as substitutes, temporarily assuming roles that support daily life. With Sayaka Uehara as our invited speaker, this symposium begins by tracing the whispers of spirits and layers of history embedded in the landscape through photography. By revisiting the lived histories of people across the Tokyo–Yokohama and Taipei–Keelung axes—mediated through the lens of Okinawa—we seek to ask: how should we inhabit and reappropriate these landscapes in our everyday lives? This research meeting invites dialogue between scholars from Tokyo and Taipei. Grounded in the regional histories of capital cities and port societies, we aim to explore new approaches to reading infrastructure, and to discuss methodological frameworks for sophisticated infrastructure management. The goal is to open new directions for collaborative research.
